MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents and Junbish party supporters continued their protest on sixth day in a row on Thursday against the appointment of the new governor for northern Faryab province.

The protestors in Maimana city, the provincial capital, warned that they would not accept any new governor unless the central government consults with Marshal AbdulRashid Dostum, the Junbish party leader.

According to proposal of Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) and presidential decree, Dawood Laghmani has been appointed as the new governor for Faryab province, replacing Naqibullah Fayiq. The former governor was later introduced as a selective member of the Upper House.

Protesters continued with their protest today and kept all governmental offices, schools and universities closed including all the city shops.

The protesters chanted “We want justice”, “We do not want Dawood Laghmani”, “the governor must be from Faryab province” and warned the central government against no consulting Marshal Dostum in appointing governors especially governor of Faryab province.

Deputy provincial Junbish party leader Engineer Amanullah Amin said it was their sixth day protesting and having closed government offices but the president was still insisting on the appointment of Dawood Laghmani as the governor who was currently in the military base.He said they would continue with their protest until their demand was met.

Head of tribal elders’ council, AbdulQudoos Qalich said that they had been protesting day and night since third day of Eid and the central government was silent, warning that the protest would turn into a disaster.

“The president and the authorities must consult with our political leaders to appoint a new governor to Faryab province,” he added.

It is worth mentioning that supporters of Jamiat-i-Islami also participated in today’s protest.
