MAIMANA (Pajhwok): The protestors in northern Faryab province on sunday introduced three individuals as their nominees for the provincial governorship and asked Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum to endorse one in agreement with the Presidential Palace.
Hundreds of people continued their protest against the appointment of a new governor in northern Faryab province on ninth day today.
The protesters chanted “Bring Laghmani out of the battalion”, “Laghmani leave Faryab”, “We do not want you” and “death to dealers”. The leaders of the protest faced difficulties to curb protesters from engaging with security personnel when they reached 50 metres closer to the military corps’ check-point.
DawoodLaghmani was appointed as the governor of Faryab province on April 20, 2021. Marshal AbdulRashiddostum reacted on his appointment and told his supporters to stand against injustice because he was not consulted on the appointment of the governor.
Today, supporters of Junbish-i-Islami party in a protest tent in Maimana city, capital of Faryab province, claimed that their efforts compelled the central government to agree with appointment of governors based on elections.
The protestors said they had picked three individuals for electing them as governor but they avoided the vote to prevent division and introduced them to Dostum for endorsement.
IhsanullahQawanich, a member of Junbish-i-Islami party in Faryab, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they negotiated with Jamiat-i-Islami party members in the province since last few days to vote for a governor, but they took the first step today.
“Political problems are yet to be solved with the government as Faryab people plan to vote for new governor, but people avoided election following advices of social figures”, he said.
Qawanich said they introduced three nominees for the position of new governor for Faryab to the government. However, he did not name the new nominees.
Meanwhile, Sayed Ahmad Sayeed, deputy Junbish-i-Islami party leader, said that former president, Hamid Karzai, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Bator Dustom, son of Dustom and Rahila Dostum, daughter of Dostum, discussed a decentralized governance system and all sides had agreed on the idea.
However, he did not provide details on the regard.
On the other hand, Abdul Manan Qatay, a member of Jamiat-i-Islami party, said that the Presidential Palace and Junbish-i-Islami party had agreed over appointing new governor for Faryab and one of three nominees would be picked for the position.
