MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Around 2,000 families have been displaced due to recent clashes in eastern Laghman province, an official said on Monday.
Eng. Shakirullah Shakir, head of the provincial Directorate of Refugees and Repatriation, said around 2,000 families have migrated to Mehtarlam, the provincial capital, as a result of clashes in their areas.
He said after the completion of a survey, displaced families would be provided with aid and assistance in cooperation with national and international NGOs.
He said majority of families have sought refuge in their relatives house in Laghman while there are 250 families who have no shelter and they were settled in a half constructed building upon the direction of governor.
Until now, he said 250 families had been registered while the process was underway to registar all displace families.
Shakir said international NGOs assured them of support in six areas and the process of aid distribution will begin when the survey is completed.
Meanwhile, officials in Laghman claimed operation to retake captured areas had been started.
Heavy fighting between the Taliban and Afghan security forces underway in the Alingar and Alishang districts, the fighting last night reached closed to Mehtarlam, the provincial capital.
