PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A Pakistani watchdog is investigating a major scandal involving sugar exports to Afghanistan, a newspaper reported on Monday.
Mill owners exported far less sugar than the quotas allotted to them to the landlocked neighbour and sold it within Pakistan.
The sugar export scam led to a big loss to the national exchequer, with mill owners and exporters getting illegal tax exemptions.
Customs official confirmed to The News International the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province had launched a probe into the scandal.
NAB has sought the record from the Collector Customs (Appraisement), Peshawar, by May 27, the daily reported.
The anti-corruption watchdog is verifying a complaint about sugar exports through Torkham, Kharlachi and Ghulam Khan crossings.
It has sought details of the mill owners exporting sugar to Afghanistan and their quotas, permits, goods declaration forms and other documents.
