Reforms in security sector crucial, insist lawmakers

KABUL (Pajhwok): Several Wolesi Jirga or lower house members on Wednesday condemned Tuesday’s bomb explosions in capital Kabul, accusing security organs of incompetency and stressed reforms in the sector.

At least 10 people were killed and 12 others wounded as a result of two explosions in Kabul on Tuesday evening. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack and the Taliban have denied their involvement.

ArifRahmani, a lawmaker from Ghazni province, condemned the attack and said that the lower house should no longer keep silence over killing of a specific ethnic group (Hazara).

He said that 37 armed attacks had been carried out in the west of Kabul that killed around a thousand people of the ethnic group.

Rahmani accused security officials of incompetency and asked the government to ensure security for people or let people improve their security on their own.

Ruqia Nail, another lawmaker pointing to yesterday’s attack, said, “The government is responsible to ensure security of its people, but it has failed and the Wolesi Jirga should have a clear stance on the matter.” She also said that the security of the west of Kabul should be handed over to people.

A number of other members of the house held similar views while some others complained about the raise of insecurity in Herat, Baghlan, Farah and Balkh provinces and asked the government to bring practical reforms in the security sector.

Mohammad SadiqQaderi, a lawmaker from Herat province said, “Please take security of Herat serious, it should a priority for the government, clashes have reached its capital and kidnapping cases and anarchism reached their peak.”

Gull Ahmad Noorzad, a lawmaker from Nimroz province, said that the security situation of his province was unstable both in the provincial capital and districts.

He said the situation would not improve until the government brought some reforms to the security sector.

Ahmad JavidJaihoon, first deputy speaker of the house who was chairing today’s session, directed Infernal Security and Defense commissions of the house to summon military officials to the next session to provide explanation about the current situation.
