KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has assured the United Nations of its solid support for the resumption of intra-Afghan peace negotiations.
Iranian foreign minister’s special envoy for Afghanistan Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian held out the assurance on Monday, IFP reported.
The Iranian diplomat met UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Jean Arnault in Tehran on Monday.
The two sides exchanged views on recent developments in Afghanistan, including the peace process and the security environment.
“We support a peace process owned and led by Afghans themselves and are ready to cooperate on paving the way for intra-Afghan dialogue,” Taherian said.
He also underlined the need for preserving the achievements Afghanistan had made over the past two decades.
The two sides voiced their concerns at the escalating violence in Afghanistan in recent months and called for the prevention of civilian casualties.
