KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Local officials say that Afghan forces recaptured Khanabad district of northeastern Kunduz province from the Taliban and a clearing operation was currently underway in the area.
A number of provincial council members of Kunduz and Taliban on Monday morning told media that Khanabad district was overran by the militants.
However, security officials said that the district was recaptured from the Taliban today afternoon.
Pamir Military Corps in Kunduz also in a statement said that Afghan forces had tactically retreated from the district center for a few hours in order to prevent civilian casualties.
The source said that many Taliban militants were killed and a number others wounded during an operation for recapturing the district. The statement said that the district was again controlled by Afghan forces.
Taliban did not comment on the regard so far.
However, the group’s spokesman today morning claimed that the district was completely fallen under their control.
He had said that the Taliban also seized a large number of weapons and ammunition after capturing the district.
Taliban claimed capturing over 30 districts in different provinces of the country during around a month.
