KABUL (Pajhwok): Achieving peace and stability in Afghanistan will not be possible without support from Iran and Pakistan, says the Russian defence minister.

Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Wednesday that dealing with the situation in Afghanistan required particular attention from neighbours and international organisations.

Over the past two decades, US and NATO forces had been unable to achieve substantial results, he told the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security.

Russian media outlets quoted Shoigu as warning that a civil war could break out in Afghanistan in the wake of the withdrawal of foreign troops.

Speaking virtually at the same event, former president Hamid Karzai urged Russia, China, Pakistan and other countries in the region to jack up support for the Afghan peace push.

It was for the Afghan people to forge a stable future but that they could not do this without the help of major world powers, including Russia, he added.

He believed the participation of Russia. China and Pakistan would be important in realizing the goal of peace. “We hope that Iran will join this process.”
