KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 1,407 new Covid-19 cases and 64 deaths from the virus have been recorded in Afghanistan in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Public Health said on Monday.

The ministry said 4,514 tests were conducted across the country in the past 24 hours and the virus was detected in 1,407 people, taking Afghanistan’s overall tally to 117,158.

Kabul recorded the highest number of cases (212) followed by western Herat province where the virus was detected in 107 people.

At least 87 new cases were found in Nangarhar, 72 in Kunduz, 72 in Laghman, 70 in Sar-i-Pul, 62 in Takhar, 62 in Ghor, 58 in MaidanWardak, 47 in Helmand, 47 in Zabul, 46 in Logar, 43 in Kunar, 36 in Faryab, 35 in Balkh, 31 in Panjshir, 30 in Farah, 24 in Kandahar, 17 in Paktika, 14 in Nuristan, 13 in Daikundi, 11 in Parwan, 10 in Khost, nine in Badghis and five in Baghlan province.

At least 917 individuals recovered from the pandemic during the period, pushing the number of total recoveries to 69,205.

A statement from MoPH said 64 people died of the virus in the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 4,794.

The global infection tally has reached 181 million, with over 3.9 million losing their lives to the pandemic.
