KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations’ top diplomat in Afghanistan has discussed the Afghan peace process with members of Taliban’s negotiating team in Qatar.
Deborah Lyons, the UN secretary-general’s special representative for Afghanistan, travelled to Doha on Monday.
The two sides conferred on the role of the United Nations in supporting the Afghan peace process, UNAMA said.
The UN mission stressed the peace negotiations should be genuine and should be seen as the only solution to Afghanistan’s problems.
Also on Monday, the Taliban said they planned to present a written peace proposal to the Afghan government next month.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid told a British wire service: "The peace talks and process will be accelerated in the coming days...”
He added: "Possibly it will take a month to reach that stage when both sides will share their written peace plan."
