KABUL (Pajhwok): Following an overnight rocket attack, all flights into and out of Kandahar Airport have been scrapped, an official said on Sunday.

With repair work underway, the airport would reopen later in the day, AFP quoted the airport director as saying.

Massoud Ahmad Pashtun said at least three rockets struck the main airport in Kandahar City late on Saturday night.

He added: “Last night three rockets were fired at the airport and two of them hit the runway… All flights have been cancelled.”

In Kabul, a civil aviation authority official verified the rocket strike, which came amid rising Taliban-linked violence across the country.

On Friday, the UN office in western Herat province came under fire. One Afghan guard was killed in the attack, which sparked strong criticism.
