Kunduz City also falls to Taliban, say sources

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Taliban militants seized the governor’s house, the central jail and some other parts of northern Kunduz province on Sunday.

A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Taliban attacked different parts of the provincial capital in the morning.

He added the insurgents had also gained control of Chawk-i-Markazi and some other parts of the city. Security forces are striving to recapture the areas lost.

The official said the 217th Pamir Military Corps and the police headquarters had not yet collapsed.

Ihsanullah, a shopkeeper in Kunduz City, told Pajhwok fire erupted at a shoe market, caused huge financial losses to people.

Taj Mohammad, commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Special Forces in the province, said the insurgents had been attacking the city for the past 24 hours.

“The Taliban wanted to seize strategic areas of the province but could not achieve their goal. The militants’ bodies are lying at the site of the clash.” He added.

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman, said they had seized the governor’s house, police headquarters, prison, intelligence department and other areas.
