MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A fierce clash erupted on Monday between government forces and Taliban militants close to the capital of northern Balkh province.
A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash was ongoing near Mazar-i-Sharif.
Atta Mohammad Noor, former governor of Balkh, wrote on his Facebook page he would not let Mazar-i-Sharif fall to the Taliban.
He said enough security forces were available to repulse Taliban attacks on the important northern city.
On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the fighters were closing in on Mazar-i-Sharif from four directions.
