PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin Pakistan Army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa have discussed the rapidly deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.
In a phone call with Bajwa on Monday, Austin also discussed regional security issues and bilateral defence relations, the Pentagon press secretary said.
Austin evinced his interest in strengthening of multiple shared goals in the region, John Kirby said in a readout of the conversation.
He added: “Secretary Austin and Gen. Bajwa discussed the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, regional security and the bilateral defence relationship more broadly.”
Also on Monday, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said it was up to the Afghan leadership to step up peace talks with the Taliban.
The Afghan leadership would be responsible for the success or failure of the dialogue, Qureshi told a news conference in Islamabad.
