PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Former Senate chairman Mian Raza Rabbani has suggested the convening of a joint session of parliament on the situation in Afghanistan.
The security environment in Afghanistan continued to deteriorate, but the government had failed to take Parliament into confidence, he said.
In a statement on Tuesday, Rabbani said: “A joint session be convened immediately so that the nation is taken into confidence.”
Currently a member of the lower house, he insisted the Senate and the National Assembly should meet jointly to formulate policy and terms of engagement with Afghanistan, the US and other countries.
The joint session of Parliament should discuss the worsening situation in Afghanistan and its consequences for the region.
He also called for parliamentary debate on the escalation of the Afghan conflict into a civil war and its impact on Pakistan’s internal security.
He also proposed discussions among lawmakers on Pakistan’s policy with reference to internally displaced persons in the eventuality of a civil war in Afghanistan.
