CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): Hundreds of inmates fled the main prison in Charikar, capital of central Parwan province, on Sunday, an official said.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Rauf Uruzgani, provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the prisoners escaped due to negligence on the part of the prison director.
Another local source, who did not want to be named, said the prisoners had revolted before they were released by the government.
About 600 inmates, including Taliban, were held in the prison, the source revealed.
A resident of Charikar said after the prisoners escaped, the security forces fired shots, leaving people in panic. The situation is now said to be normal.
