SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Local sources in northern Jawzjan province on Tuesday said that unknown armed people set on fire the Bakhdi Park facility in Shiberghan City, the provincial capital, while the Taliban have launched a probe into the incident.

The facility was constructed some 50 years back by different government institutions and was used for holding festivals and special events.

Mohammad Rasoul Akhundzada, a resident of the locality, said the Bakhdi Park area was situated in front of the Governor House and was set on fire on Monday night.

“After taking over power, the Taliban pledged to protect public property but unknown armed men set the facility on fire in front of them,” he said.  He demanded the Taliban should provide answer for the incident and unearth the reality.

Baryalai Bashir, a resident of Shiberghan city, said nobody knew how Bakhdi Park caught fire. He said there was no fire brigade for hours and the facility was engulfed in flames.

A governor office source wishing not to be named said the Taliban were involved in the fire incident of the Bakdshi Park.

But the Taliban have rejected the allegation.
