KABUL (Pajhwok): Australia on Wednesday ruled out accepting large numbers of Afghan refugees in the wake of Taliban’s takeover of the country.

AFP quoted Prime Minister Scott Morrison as saying that Australia planned to issue Afghans with 3,000 visas over a year.

He told reporters: “I note that some are talking about figures of 20,000 but can I tell you there are no clear plans about that. Australia is not going into that territory.”

Over the past eight years, around 8,500 Afghan nationals have been resettled in Australia, with 430 coming since April.

Also on Wednesday, the first evacuation flight from Afghanistan landed in the United Arab Emirates.

In Canberra, the Foreign Ministry announced the arrival of the first French evacuation flight carrying the Afghan citizens under threat in Paris from Kabul.

As part of the evacuation effort, two flights carrying French, Afghans, Indians and other nationalities have landed in Paris as of Tuesday.
