PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): About 1,100 people, including diplomats, staff of international agencies and journalists, have been evacuated from Kabul, Pakistan says.

Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, acknowledged the situation in Afghanistan was challenging.

But Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul continued to operate, the veteran diplomat said in an interview with CNN on Friday.

He said the embassy was processing all visa applications and helping those who wanted to utilise Pakistan as a transit point to leave Afghanistan.

Pakistan was operating three flights a day to the Kabul airport so that 500 to 600 people were evacuated on a daily basis, he added.

Akram promised Pakistan would also facilitate those with valid documents wanting to enter it through the land routes between the two countries.

On Friday, the Pakistan International Airlines resumed its Kabul operations, and brought to Islamabad 350 passengers.
