KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Arab Emirates has promised hosting 5,000 Afghan evacuated from their country in the wake of Taliban’s takeover.
In response to a request from the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi announced that it would host the Afghans on a temporary basis.
Later on, the Afghans would travel on to other nations, WAM news agency reported, citing a statement from the ministry.
The evacuees will travel to the UAE from Kabul on US aircraft in the coming days. The humanitarian gesture follows the UAE’s recent facilitation of dozens of flights carrying foreign citizens from Afghanistan, including diplomats.
Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi, assistant minister of foreign affairs said the initiative reflected the UAE’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation, particularly in times of need.
He added: “The UAE is keen to continue its work alongside its international partners to advance efforts to assist the Afghan people during this time of uncertainty.”
