KABUL (Pajhwok): A special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Afghanistan us set to take place today (Tuesday).

The UN body said the serious human rights concerns and the situation in Afghanistan following Taliban’s takeover would be addressed.

UNHRC said the session was being convened on the basis of an August 17 request from Pakistan, the coordinator of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and Afghanistan.

A special session of the council can be convened if a request id supported by a third (16 or more of the 47 members).

This request has received support from 89 states so far, including 29 members the council and 60 observer states, the Hindustan Times reported.

On the eve of the meeting, Foreign Office minister said the Taliban needed to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
