JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The residents of eastern Nangarhar province have asked the Taliban to allow banks to resume their operations.

They said all business and trade related activities are linked to banking system, demanding a prompt resumption of their operations.

Ihsanullah, a resident of Nangarhar, visited a bank in Jalalabad City to withdraw money from his account but the facility was closed.

He said the prices of food and non-food items had increased due to the closure of banks.

Zaman, a resident of Jalalabad, said he had been visiting the bank for the past eight days, but unable to withdraw money. “Most people have run out of cash and they don’t have money to purchase things for daily use.”

ZalmayAzami, a member of the Nangarhar Chamber of Commerce, said economic decline, surge in the prices of commodities were linked with the closure of banks.

Due to the closure of banks, businesspersons could not import more items, he said, urging the Taliban to allow resumption of banking activities.

Earlier, Taliban Spokesperson ZabihullahMujahid had told a press conference that banks would resume operations on Wednesday.
