Taliban should pay attention to Afghans’ basic needs: WHMO

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Human Rights Watch and Media Organization known as WHMO has asked the international community to discharge its humanitarian responsibilities toward the Afghan people keeping in mind the UN’s warning about a ‘humanitarian disaster’ in Afghanistan.

UN secretary general, AntónioGuterreson Tuesday warned of a possible humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan and asked for emergency assistance to the country.

In a statement, he said, “A humanitarian catastrophe looms in Afghanistan. Almost half of the population needs humanitarian assistance. 1 in 3 don’t know where their next meal will come from. Now more than ever, Afghan children, women and men need the support & solidarity of the international community.”

On the other hand, WHMO in a statement said that Afghanistan had entered a new phase and the country was currently faced with a major economic and humanitarian crisis.

Currently half of the population of Afghanistan or 18 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance for their survival, the organization said.

It said that children under five years of age were prone to malnutrition and women and Afghan men were in need of help from the international community more than ever before.

Many people complained about joblessness, poverty, soaring prices of essential items and drought in the country, the source said.

“We once again ask the international community to follow the direction of the UN secretary general and discharge its humanitarian responsibility about the plight of the people of Afghanistan,” the statement added.

The Taliban should also pay attention to basic needs of people and provide their humanitarian rights on time, it concluded.
