Khan underlines economic support for Afghanistan

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistani prime minister says the international community has the responsibility to stand by the Afghans, support them economically and help rebuild the war-ravaged country.

In separate telephone calls on Sunday, Imran Khan discussed the situation in Afghanistan with the crown princes of Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi and the emir Qatar.

Khan highlighted the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan for the region¸ saying an inclusive political settlement was the best course to adopt in the neighbouring country.

During his call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the prime minister said a peaceful and stable Afghanistan was vital for Pakistan and regional stability.

His office said the premier stressed that the global fraternity had “the responsibility to stand by the Afghan people and support them economically.

He also emphasised the imperative of addressing Afghanistan’s urgent humanitarian needs and taking steps to ensure its economic stability.

“Both leaders agreed on the importance of an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan,” prime minister’s office said.

They also called for the international community to step up its engagement with Afghanistan to avert any humanitarian and refugee crises.

Khan and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed exchanged views on issues of bilateral interest as well as regional developments.

On the situation in Afghanistan, the premier called for enduring peace and stability. They agreed an inclusive political settlement was the best way forward to ensure safety and security as well as protection of the rights of the fghan people.

Khan asked the international community to stay engaged to support the Afghan people and address their dire humanitarian needs.

In their call, Khan and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani conferred on the evolving situation in Afghanistan.

After 40 years of conflict and instability, there was an opportunity to establish lasting peace in Afghanistan, the Pakistani leader believed.
