KABUL (Pajhwok): The killing of civilians by US troops and their allies in Afghanistan must be thoroughly investigated, says a Chinese diplomat.
Jiang Duan, minister of the Chinese Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, called for the investigation on behalf of a group of countries on Tuesday.
According to Xinhua news agency, the call came in a joint statement on the second day of the ongoing 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The wars waged by the US led to tremendous casualties and large-scale displacement of civilians, the statement alleged, stressing the accountability of the perpetrators.
Jiang warned: “The drastic change in Afghanistan shows once again that military interventions and power politics get no support. Imposing American-style democracy on others will only lead to turmoil and is doomed to failure.”
Expressing concern about human rights issues in the US, the statement urged the Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights to continue addressing the human rights situation there.
It blamed the US for disregarding the right to life and right to health of its citizens despite possessing the most advanced medical equipment and technologies.
America still had the largest number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the world, the statement said.
Instead of fighting the coronavirus, the US was obsessed with political manipulation of issues like the virus origin-tracing in a bid to shift the blame onto other countries.
