KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) on Monday called on charity organizations, business people and donor countries to take part in its special week campaign and help in providing aid to the needy people in Afghanistan.

The special week of ARCS begins from October 16 and continues until October 22 in capital Kabul and provinces of the country with the aim of collecting aid for the needy and victims of natural disasters.

“ARCS was created as a result of the efforts of the country’s well-meaning compatriots and strengthened financially with support of the country’s sympathizers,” said Mulavi Matiulhaq Khalis, acting head of the organization.

Referring to the increase in poverty, unemployment and other problems in the country, he said, “The problems may be more than 90 percent while ARCS has no its own budget and there is need for international community’s assistance so it could help poor people and orphans.”

Meanwhile, Noor Agha Sahebzadah, a spokesman for the organization, said: “During the special week, we ask businessmen and other people to help us in this campaign.”

“We ask for help from the people and charitable organizations, pilgrims and businessmen, we collect charity to distribute it to the people in need,” he said.

Maulvi Noorullah Nouri, acting border and tribal affairs minister, said, “Afghanistan is currently facing many problems, particularly in the economy.”

He called on donor countries and aid organizations to provide urgent assistance to those in need in the country, and said, “The international community must work with us; because we need help in health, education, reconstruction and other areas.”

ARCS in a statement said that in addition to natural disasters, the coronavirus pandemic, poverty, hunger and internal migration were other problems people were struggling with.

“People are deprived of access to basic living facilities, so public participation in the drive is in fact a support to people in need and it is humanity,” the statement said.

In the ongoing week, ARCS workers and volunteers collect donations from national businessmen, shopkeepers, property owners, government employees, students and pupils of educational institutions and other people interested in contributing to the campaign, the source concluded.
