PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): NATO has promised enhanced cooperation with Pakistan on dealing with challenges in neighbouring Afghanistan.
NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative Stefano Pontecorvo met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi Wednesday.
The diplomat appreciated Pakistan’s role in Afghan situation, including successful evacuation operations and efforts for regional stability.
Matters related to mutual interest, peace and stability in the region and the situation in Afghanistan were discussed, said an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.
During the meeting, the army chief underlined the need for global convergence on Afghanistan to avoid a possible humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood also stressed the international community must remain positively engaged with Afghanistan.
Speaking to the NATO delegation led by Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo, SCR to Afghanistan, the foreign secretary shared Pakistan’s perspective on the latest developments in the region.
He stressed the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. He also highlighted Pakistan’s facilitative role in the evacuation of the diplomatic personnel and staff of embassies and international organisations from Afghanistan.
