FIROZKOH (Pajhwok): A number of residents of Lal wa Sarjangal district of western Ghor province called the first snowfall in their area this year as a good omen, but said they lacked heating resources for the winter due to their bad economic situation.

Mohammad Hassan, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that their district received the first snowfall late on Monday night and most of residents of the area were happy about it.

“The snowfall this year came early compared to other years, in the past, the snow would fall usually in late November or early December,” he said.

He said, “Last night's snowfall gave us hope that next year our agriculture will improve and we will get rid of poverty and hunger," he added.

However, Mohammad Ameer, another resident of the district, says most people of the district are facing economic hardships and they have so far been unable to arrange heating resources for the winter.

He called on aid organizations and the government to provide heating materials to needy families to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the winter.

"In previous years, there would be snowing in the early days of December, but this year, fortunately, it snowed earlier and we are happy," said Ameer.

MulaviAbdulhaiMobasher, head of Ghor Department of Refugees, expressed concern that the early winter in the province would hamper the process of providing assistance to thousands of needy families in the province.

He called on aid giving agencies to provide immediate assistance to families living in poverty in the province.
