TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Three children of a family were killed and five others were injured in a blast caused by an unexploded device in central Uruzgan province, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place in Chashma Miran area of Tirinkot late yesterday. Abdul Malik, a family member of the victims, told Pajhwok Afghan News the area had been a battleground for years where children found an unexploded rocket-propelled grenade.
He added that children set fire to the device, which exploded, killing three members of a family (a brother and two sisters) and injuring five others (a brother and four sisters) aged between four and 15 years.
He said the injured were first taken to the provincial hospital and from there to Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar province.
The incident worried local residents who say the area is littered with remnants of war, landmines and unexploded ordnance that have threatened their lives.
A resident of the area, who did not want to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News that people were in danger of being killed or injured every day due to the remnants of the conflict.
Dr. Aminullah Tokhi, head of Uruzgan provincial hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News four injured people were taken to the hospital from Cheshma Miransima last night, two of whom were taken to Kandahar and two others were being treated there.
Uruzgan police chief Haji Bashir said he had instructed all security officials to remove the remnants of the fighting from the area. He acknowledged that some areas were under threat and urged people not go near such sites.
