SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Local officials in northern Jawzjan province say the local administration has started providing cash assistance to 137 needy families in the province, where many people are concerned about rising poverty and joblessness.

HamidullahEhsani, financial and administrative director at the provincial Refugees and Repatriation Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the cash assistance had been provided by ACTED, an NGO which distributed 14,000 afghanis to each family in need.

He added that the families, mostly residents of Shiberghan city, the provincial capital, and Aqcha and Darzab districts had been identified as deserving based on a previous survey.

The Refugees and Repatriation Department continued to attract food and non-food assistance for needy families from charity organizations, Ehsani said.

“We plan to provide necessary assistance to all families in need before winter approaches,” he said.

Khairuddin, a resident of Mughal village in Darzab district, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “Two years ago, I was forced to leave my home due to war between the Taliban, ISIS and former government forces, I live in Shiberghan city since that time and I am the breadwinner of a six-member family.”

He said his house was destroyed in bombardment of security forces of the former regime, and he currently had no finance resources to rebuild it.

“I want businessmen and wealthy people to at least help us in this cold season,” he said. He thanked ACTED for its assistance to people.

“This is the first time I have received financial aid,” said Saifullah, a resident of KaltaShakh village in Aqcha district. He said that he and his two other brothers were all working to win bread for their family.

Also a week ago, the Refugees and Repatriation Department of Jawzjan, obtained financial aid and distributed it to 160 families with the help of UNHCR, he said.
