KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Efforts are underway for the expansion of Dehla Dam and for the launch of some other development schemes in southern Kandahar province, an official said on Monday.

Water and Energy Minister Mawavi Abdul Latif Mansour during his trip to Kandahar province visited Dehla Dam and told reporters there was the possibility to expand the dam and efforts were underway in this regard.

He said with increased capacity the dam could store more water and could help overcome drought.

ToryalaiMahbobi, an official of the Southern River Zone, said Asian Development Bank had allocated $450 million for the expansion of Dehla Dam.

He said the acquisition of land of 64 villages and supply of drinking water to Kandahar City was part of the project which should be implemented.

He said sand and clay had accumulated in the water reservoir and there was need for 12 metre more increase in the dam’s hight.

Kandahar farmers are happy over the expansion work of Dehla Dam and demanded swift launch of work.

Raz Mohammad, one of the farmers, said there is need for sustainable water resources in the country because agriculture was the backbone of the country and there was need for more work to boost this sector.

Dehla Dam was built by the US back in 1952 in the Shah WaliKot district some 40 kilometre from Kandahar City.

Earlier the dam stored 500 million cubic metre water but now this capacity has reduced to 300 million cubic metre.
