80 Daesh militants surrendered in Nangarhar

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least 80 Daesh (Islamic State) militants have surrendered to the government as a result of mediation by elders in eastern Nangarhar province.

Dr. Bashir, director of intelligence, told a gathering that 80 Daesh members had laid down arms in Ghanikhel, Achin, Khogyani, Batikot and Koz Munar districts.

He said they had pardoned the rebels following mediation by tribal elders. The fighters have promised abandoning anti-government activities.

The surrendering IS members had expressed remorse for their past actions and called on others to join the Islamic Emirate and work for the country's development, he added.

Mira Khan, a tribal elder from Khogyani district, said in the past, jihad was waged for the return of Islamic rule. But now that foreigners have left the country, all groups must stop armed activities and work for Afghanistan’s prosperity.

According to the Nangarhar Intelligence Department, about 300 IS fighters have surrendered in the past two months, and the process will continue.
