ZARANJ (Pajhowk): Citizens of Zaranj City, the capital of western Nimroz province, have expressed their concern over the use of Iranian currency in daily transactions and called on the caretaker government to prevent the practice.
They cited restrictions on banks as the main reason behind the increase in the use of Toman in daily transactions.
Following the fall of the previous regime on August 15 this year, more than $9 billion of Afghanistan’s assets were frozen by the United States and aid from the international community was suspended.
Allah Dad, a resident of Zaranj, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the use of Toman in daily transactions was common in the province in the past as well.
He adds: “In our families, our children know the Toman money well, but unfortunately they do not know the Afghan currency that belongs to us. Our request to the Islamic Emirate is to prevent the use of the Iranian currency in daily transactions in Nimroz province.”
According to him, the restrictions imposed on banks have increased the use of Iranian tomans in daily transactions.
Meanwhile, SeyedNoorullah, another resident of Zaranj, told Pajhwok that in the markets of Zaranj, Toman was used in all financial transactions.
Meanwhile, Jan Agha, a shopkeeper in Zaranj, told Pajhwok: “Many businessmen and shopkeepers suffer financial losses because more than 95 percent of the goods in market are bought and sold in Tomans.
“We buy all our goods from the markets of Kabul, Kandahar and other provinces in Afghani, here we sell them back in tomans.”
