Jawzjan residents want graft culture eradicated

SHEBERGHAN (Pajhwok): An employee of the anti-crime department has been arrested in connection with taking a bribe of 10,000 afghanis in northern Jawzjan province.

This comes as residents of the province have urged the government to take concrete measures to eradicate the scourge if corruption.

Police chief Mullah Siraj told Pajhwok Afghan News: “The employee. named Qudratullah, was arrested red-handed while taking the bribe.”

He added the detainee had violated the principles and regulations of the police force and would be dealt with in accordance with the Islamic Sharia law.

He clarified the issue of taking money to resolve cases had been inherited from the previous government and that some people were still doing such things in violation of the law.

The police chief called on the people to cooperate with the authorities concerned on identifying and arresting the corrupt individuals.

"The issue of bribery has become a culture in our society today, and it is still present in government offices," said Sayed Khalid, a resident of Shiberghan.

The fight against administrative graft required determined efforts, he believed, saying the arrest of one or two government officials would not make any difference.

Abdul Salam, another resident of the provincial capital, said: "The Taliban must discharge their obligation to eradicate corruption in government offices; otherwise people will be frustrated with them like the previous regime."
