PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan has allowed the use of Afghan trucks for the transportation of India’s wheat aid to the war-ravaged country.

Foreign Office spokesman Asim Iftikhar said on Friday: “It has been decided to allow the use of Afghan trucks for (wheat) transportation from Wagah border to Torkham.”

He added the decision on permitting Afghan trucks to carry the humanitarian assistance had been conveyed to the Indian Charge d’Affaires.

Pakistan’s decision was demonstrative of its commitment to facilitating the proposed humanitarian assistance, the spokesman commented.

Iftikhar urged New Delhi to expeditiously take necessary steps for the delivery of the humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

Nearly 23 million people Afghans are facing imminent severe hunger and millions more likely to sink into poverty, UN agencies warn.

India has offered to provide 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat and lifesaving medicines in humanitarian aid for the people of Afghanistan.
