KABUL (Pajhwok): Qatar and Turkey have pledged to step up efforts for averting a looming humanitarian crisis and economic meltdown in Afghanistan.

The vow came at a joint media briefing given by Turkish Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Doha on Monday.

Al-Jazeera quoted the Qatari minister as saying his country would work with Turkey and Taliban leaders to ensure the Kabul airport continued to function.

Earlier in the day, the foreign ministers met as part of the seventh annual Qatar-Turkey Strategic Dialogue.

Co-chaired by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the two-day dialogue concludes today (Tuesday).

Turkey was trying to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan, said Cavusoglu, who asked the global fraternity to engage with the Taliban.

He added: “This is what we have done as Afghans are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Turkey is cooperating with Qatar on offering humanitarian assistance to the Afghans.”
