GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Employees of the Zonal Hospital in southern Ghazni province have not received their salaries for the past five months, making life difficult for them economically.
Hospital Director Dr. Ajab Khan said they had 230 staffers, all regularly attending their duties. However, they have been unpaid for the past five months.
As a result of the delay in salary payment, he said, doctors and other staff members were faced with serious economic problems.
Recently, some logistic and equipment-related shortages had been overcome but the delay in salaries added to workers’ financial woes.
Ahmad Khan, one of the doctors, told Pajhwok Afghan News: “This is the fifth month on the trot that we didn’t get our salaries. We have been coming to hospital regularly.”
He added: “All employees have families and have to look after them. In the absence of money, how can you live and meet your day-to-day needs?”
Some doctors hinted at quitting their jobs if the salary issue was not solved soon.
One of them, wishing not to be named, asked: “How long will we work without salaries? We have families, children who want food, clothes and make other essential demands.”
Residents of Ghazni also urged the central government to sort out the salary issue for Zonal Hospital staff. If doctors quit their jobs, people may face serious problems.
Inhabitant Roohullah said after several years, a fair hospital had started functioning. If doctors’ salaries were not paid, he warned, health services would suffer a setback.
