KABUL (Pajhwok): The Council of Ministers has directed the Economic Commission to take urgent steps to ensure the stability of the afghani.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the government spokesman, said a meeting of the cabinet was held at the Presidential Palace here on Monday.
He said the meeting tasked the Economic Commission, headed by Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs Maulvi Abdul Salam Hanafi, to take urgent measures to stabilise the afghani in coordination with all relevant organs.
In a statement, Mujahid said the cabinet recommended strict measures against the smuggling of the dollar, distribution of counterfeit afghanis and other factors that adversely affected the value of the local currency.
The Council of Ministers instructed that urgent action be taken to identify measures that are critical to the stability of the afghani.
Dad Gul Hazratzai, deputy head of Money Changers Association, told Pajhwok Afghan News the depreciation of the afghani was unprecedented. He called for the central bank’s intervention.
