Report about man committing suicide due to poverty incorrect

KABUL (Pajhwok): Reports that a man in central Parwan province hanged himself to death due to poverty are untrue. His relatives say the man committed suicide due to a family tiff.

Claim

Kabul-based daily Hasht-i-Subh published a report that a 40-year-old man allegedly hanged himself in Parwan as a result of financial hardships.

The newspaper quoted a local source as saying Mohammad Najib killed himself on Friday night in the Tatmandra village.

According to the report, Najib used to drive a passenger bus. However, he lost his job recently.

The report also circulated on social media.

Fact check

Khatera Nekzad, Najib’s relative, told Pajhwok Afghan News the report regarding the man hanging himself due to poverty was flawed.

She said Najib had financial problems, but family problems were the main reason that forced him to commit suicide.

“Najib had some problem with his father two or three days ago. His father expelled him from the house and subsequently he committed suicide.”

Mehdi, Najib’s brother-in-law, also said family issues were behind the suicide. He denied the man had hanged himself because of poverty.

Outcome

Some media outlets have reported that a man in Parwan province hanged himself due to poverty, but his relatives deny the claim, citing family problems as the reason.

Verdict

The rumour of a person committing suicide due to poverty in Parwan is incorrect.
