KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called for dialogue between the international community and the Afghan government to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Filippo Grande, UNHCR commissioner, said that stability in Afghanistan was possible through talks between the international community and the Taliban.
"When I was in Kabul, our message to the Taliban was that if you want your money to come out of the freeze and your country once again attain political support, you have to step in with the international community," he said.
“We need to continue to promote the notion that women must work, that minorities must be represented and that girls must attend schools,” he said.
He added that these discussions with current Afghan officials may seem complicated, but the international community could do it.
Grande said the current Afghan officials should understand that Afghanistan is not a country of the 90s and the current realities are different from the reality of that time.
Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman of the Afghan government, talking to Azadi Radio, said, “The Islamic Emirate believes in dialogue from the beginning. We expect the international community and all countries that raise concerns, to take action through dialogue. The Islamic Emirate is fully prepared for dialogue."
Nearly half of Afghans are facing famine, Filippo Grande said, adding that humanitarian aid to Afghans continues as humanitarian organizations now have access to more parts of Afghanistan than ever before.
