MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Security forces and supporters of Makhdom Mohammad Alam Rabbani have claimed suffering casualties as a result of firing in violent protest in Maimana, the capital of northwestern Faryab province.
Hundreds of Rabbani’s supporters took to the streets protesting the arrest of Rabbani and demanded his release.
They claimed Rabbani staged Jihad against former government and the US forces. He also worked as Sar-i-Pul deputy governor but he was arrested by security forces on Wednesday evening on the order of central government.
Government Deputy Spokesperson Ahmadullah Waseeq on his twitter account wrote: “Situation in Faryab is under control and news reports about revolt against the government is totally incorrect.”
Qari Zabihullah who introduced himself as Rabbani’s secretary, said: “Today some of relatives of Rabbani wanted to go to the Governor House but they were stopped by security forces and bullets were sprayed on them in which four people were injured.”
Faryab Information Department Director Mawlavi Shams Mohammadi said situation were under control and said he was unaware about the injured supporters of Rabbani.
He, however, said one security personnel was killed as a result of firing, by the supporters of Rabbani.
He confirmed the clash but added it was not yet ascertained which side initiated the firing.
