QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Officials in western Badghis province say people affected by the recent earthquake in the province have been provided with cash and other essential items’ assistance.
According to a report, two strong earthquakes jolted parts of Badghis on Monday, the first at around 2pm and the second at around 4pm, shaking the capital and districts of the province.
The government said in a statement that 22 people were killed, 40 were injured and nearly 1,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed in the quake in Qadis district of Badghis province.
Baz Mohammad Sarwari, Badghis information and culture director, told Pajhwok Afghan News, “Today, 50,000 afghanis were distributed to the heirs of each martyr and 25,000 afghanis to each injured person in the earthquake.”
In addition to distributing cash, the families of the victims also received food and other essential items, he said.
Sarwari said the aid was distributed to the victims in Qadis district by the Disaster Management Department of the province.
“Non-governmental aid organizations have also started a survey to help the earthquake victims in the province,” he added.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicentre of the quake –measuring 5.3 on the open-ended Richter scale — was in Qadis district.
