KABUL (Pajhwok): India and Pakistan have agreed to transfer 50,000 tons of wheat aid from Delhi to Afghanistan and the first shipment is expected to be sent next month.
The Times of India today reported that the two countries had agreed to transfer 50,000 tons of wheat from Delhi to Afghanistan via the Attari-Wagah border. The aid is expected to be delivered to Afghanistan via thousands of trucks in early February.
The source said that about two months ago, India donated 50,000 tons of wheat to Afghanistan following drought and famine crisis in Afghanistan but transfer of the aid to the country was delayed due to differences between India and Pakistan.
The Times of India said according to the agreement between the two countries, trucks under the World Food Program (WFP) will transport wheat donated by India to Afghanistan via Torkham.
As per the understanding reached between the two sides, Afghan trucks operating under UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) will ferry Indian wheat from the India-Pakistan border to Afghanistan via Pakistan’s Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan, the report said.
Pakistan has provided transit facilities for Indian aid to Afghanistan over the past few decades.
India and Pakistan agreed over the transfer of aid to Afghanistan after two months of differences between the two countries over the issue.
