KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan owes Tajikistan 33 million US dollars on account of power imports, a media report said on Tuesday.

Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) has assured to pay the dues to Dushanbe this month, Tajikistan’s power utility chief was quoted as saying.

CEO Mahmadumar Asozoda told reporters in Dushanbe: “In January, DABS paid US$2 million and promised to pay the same amount this week.”

Asia-Plus news agency quoted him as saying the main problem in repaying the debts was that banks in Afghanistan could provide DABS with only $2 million a week.

Last year, Tajikistan exported electricity worth $56.3 million to Afghanistan. Under a deal, Tajikistan agreed last year to supply about 1.5 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan.

On December 26, 2021, the two sides signed an agreement on the supply of electricity from Tajikistan to Afghanistan in 2022.

In line with the agreement, Tajikistan will supply daily 400MW of electricity to Afghanistan from May to September.
