KABUL (Pajhwok): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his spouse have tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Erdogan tweeted on Saturday: “Today, the result of our COVID-19 test was positive. Thankfully, we have a mild illness, which we learned to be an Omicron variant.”
The tweet, cited by the Associated Press, added: “We are on our mission. We will continue our work at home. We look forward to your prayers.”
Erdoğan, who received his third vaccine dose in June last year, sent the message after appearing via video link at a tunnel-opening ceremony in Istanbul.
Around 12 million Covid-19 infections and nearly 90,000 deaths have been reported in Turkey since the start of the pandemic.
