KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Seventy educational facilities in northern Kunduz province have either been devastated or partially damaged during the past conflict, an official said on Saturday.

Kunduz Education Director MawlaviEsmael Abu Hamid told Pajhwok Afghan News these educational institutions had been damaged in the past conflict in Kunduz City, the provincial capital, and six districts.

He said 13 of the 70 damaged schools have been rehabilitated while work on the re-construction of other facilities was underway.

He said 30,000 new students will be enrolled in the coming educational year, adding that efforts were underway for the development of the education sector in the province.

Atiqullah, a resident of Chahardari district, said no school was available in the far-flung areas of the district.

“No school is built in far-flung areas of the district, people are facing huge problems as a result,” he said.

He urged government officials to build more schools in order to attract new students and educate people.

In Kunduz, 30,000 children had been deprived of education in the past due to conflict and clashes as the conflicting parties used schools and other educational facilities as bastions.
