PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A TV journalist has been gunned down by armed robbers in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, officials say.
Athar Mateen, senior producer at Samaa TV, was shot dead in the North Nazimabad area of the city on Friday, a police officer said.
Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Usman Maroof said Mateen was killed while returning home after dropping off his children at school.
The armed robbers riding a motorbike attacked the reporter near Shah Medical Hospital, the police officer said, citing preliminary investigations.
As the motorcyclists approached, the journalist sped up his car and hit the bikers, who fell to the ground. In reaction, they fire on the man and fled, Maroof explained.
However, area residents said the armed motorcyclists were robbing the journalist of his valuables. Upon resistance, he was shot dead.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, meanwhile, condemned the killing and instructed the authorities to bring the killers to book.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah sought a report from the additional inspector general of police on the murder.
