KABUL (Pajhwok): Renowned Afghan folk singer and producer Ustad Gul Zaman has died at the age of 82.
Born in eastern Paktia province, he spent most of his life in Kabul. Zaman sang up to 800 songs for the national radio and television since 1964.
Former Deputy Information and Cultural Affairs Head Haroon Hakimi confirmed on Twitter the death of Zaman.
Another former senior government official, Mahboob Shah Mahboob, also verified the singer’s demise.
He credited Zaman for serving Pashto folk music and spending much of his live promoting this cause.
He regretted the Afghans did love music, but looked down upon musicians. Therefore, he said, Afghan artistes suffered hardships at the end of their careers. He called Zaman the best example.
