KABUL (Pajhwok): The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) director-general on Sunday urged donors to take urgent action to prevent the collapse of Afghanistan’s economy and its public sector.
On his Twitter handle, Robert Mardini underlined ICRC’s resolve to keep a spotlight on the alarming humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. He assured the Afghan people that the ICRC would stand by them during uncertain times.
“Leaving #Afghanistan with our partners at @danskrodekors & @PunainenRisti resolved to keep a spotlight on the alarming humanitarian situation in #Afghanistan. Our message to donors: action is needed now to shore up the economy & prevent the collapse of public sector services. And our message to the #Afghan people: @ICRC has been present in your country for 35 years. Together with
@ARCSAfghanistan & other #RCRCMovement partners, we will continue to stand by you as the future remains uncertain,” he wrote.
Afghanistan plunged into humanitarian and economic crisis after the Taliban takeover of the country on August 15 last year.
Foreign aid to the war-torn country stopped as a result. The US and other countries imposed sanctions on Afghanistan, which further deteriorated the economic situation in the country.
Aid agencies say up to 24 million people, more than half of the country’s population, are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
