Sale of substandard, expired food worries Heratis

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Following the surge in prices of some food and fuel items in western Herat province, citizens and shopkeepers in the province are complaining about the sale of outdated and substandard materials.

Abdullah, one of the shopkeepers on Eidgah Road in Herat, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the open sale of substandard food and beverages had also reduced their sales.

According to him, some people arbitrarily, without having any trade union license or paying taxes to the government, sold low-quality and outdated materials in the crowded areas of the city on roads and at a lower price than the shops. They say this has become a concern for them.

Mir Ahmad, another shopkeeper, confirmed Abdullah’s statement and said the government should stop selling low-quality and expired food and beverages in the city.

Mirahmad, a resident of Khairabad in Herat, who recently bought food and beverages from a shop in the Shahr-e-Naw area of ​​Herat, told Pajhwok that he bought the goods at a lower price than in shops.

“Unhealthy food can absorb 70 percent of harmful and impure substances into the human body,” said Mohammad Asif Kabir, deputy director of the Herat Public Health Department.

He admits that low-quality and expired food is now being sold on the streets; But he urges the citizens of Herat to refrain from substandard and unhealthy food and beverages sold on the streets.

Maulana Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the governor of Herat, told local media in Herat in recent days: “A commission has been set up to monitor and prevent the sale of substandard and outdated materials, and it monitors the city every day.”

At the same time, Basir Ahmad Qarizadeh, director of the Municipal Market Regulation Department, told Pajhwok that in the past six months, about 30 tons of substandard and expired food have been collected from the city.
